A4Tech X7-G800V vs BIOS

The A4Tech X7-G800V gaming keyboard didn’t work before the OS loaded, but updating the BIOS on the MSI PH61-P33 motherboard fixed the problem

New Year and a New Keyboard

This New Year, I got a A4Tech X7-G800V Gaming USB Black keyboard as a gift. I was happy - until I plugged it into my PC.

The Keyboard Didn’t Work in BIOS

The keyboard did not work before the operating system loaded. I couldn’t enter BIOS or choose an OS in GRUB. This was a problem because I use several operating systems.

Trying to Fix It — BIOS Update

I read some forums and decided to update the BIOS. BIOS updates often fix bugs and add new features.

My motherboard is MSI PH61-P33 (MS-7732). It had BIOS version 1.3 since I bought it. I downloaded Live Update from MSI’s official website and updated to version 1.7, but the keyboard still didn’t work.

Manual Update to the Latest Version

I saw that version 2.4 was available on MSI’s site, but Live Update only installed version 1.7.

I downloaded the update manually and ran the installer, but it didn’t work - it said it must run from a USB flash drive.

I copied the files to a flash drive and started again. The program created a folder, started the update, and after 5 minutes, the PC restarted, continued the update, and restarted again.

Success

I pressed the DEL key - and entered BIOS! The A4Tech X7-G800V keyboard now worked before the OS loaded.

Conclusion

Always check that your BIOS and drivers are up to date - it can help you avoid many problems.
