MTK6589 DATA Error: Why the App Doesn’t Work and How to Fix It

Many people with Chinese smartphones like Prestigio or Lenovo get an MTK6589 DATA error when changing memory settings. Here's why it happens and how to fix it.

Internal Memory Problem in Chinese Smartphones

Many phones like Prestigio, Lenovo, and others have poorly organized internal memory:

  • About 500 MB is for apps
  • And 1.5–2.5 GB is for a second partition that most people don’t use

Most users save their data on an SD card, not in that second partition.

Apps Stop Installing

After a while, the first partition gets full. Play Market starts showing errors about low storage. The user tries to fix it by merging the two partitions or making more space for apps.

The Guide That Doesn’t Work

There are many guides online. For example, for Prestigio MultiPhone 5044 Duo, people suggest using the app MTK6589_DATAV2.0.apk.

It seems like everything should work. But when the user opens the app, they see this error:

1
An error occurred in the MTK6589 DATA app

Why This Error Happens

There are two main reasons:

  • No root access
Some guides mention it, but not all. Still, it’s clear that this kind of operation needs root access.

  • BusyBox is not installed
This is often not mentioned. But MTK6589 DATA won’t work without BusyBox. If you don’t have it, you will see the error.

What to Do

To fix the MTK6589 DATA error:

  • Make sure your phone has root access
  • Install BusyBox from Play Market or another app store
  • After that, run MTK6589_DATAV2.0.apk
